1967 Carver basketball team recognized.

Members of the 1967 Carver High School State Championship Basketball Team Charles Bluitt, James Shell, Arvell Bailey and Jessie Shell are recognized at the Tupelo High School Basketball game on January 28.

What Happened: On Tuesday January 28th, 2020, four men were  recognized by the men’s basketball coach Jeffrey Norwood for being a part of the state championship basketball team at Carver High in 1967. At that time Tupelo Schools were segregated.  The African American students attended Carver High School.  They played in a different league than their peers at Tupelo High School until the schools were fully  integrated in 1971.

Key moment: “Tupelo High School Basketball team won a state championship in their division in 65 & 66 and then again in 68. So really, Tupelo, Mississippi High Schools won [a state championship] for four years straight,” coach Norwood said.
