Ghosts invade Mississippi

Lyric
What is it: Theatre
When is it: built in 1912
Where is it: Tupelo, Mississippi
Who Haunts it: Antonie, and many other people who died there
Why is it: In 1936 Tupelo experienced a F5 tornado that killed approximately 350 lives. Since the Lyric was one of the two remaining bigger buildings it was turned into a hospital where many medical procedures were performed including surgerys. Many people died in the old theatre and it is said that these people’s spirits are still there. One of these ghosts is named Antonie, he is known for humming, stealing keys, and moving things around.
THS´s very own Ms. Austin has had a few experiences with Antonie while she was directing shows at the theatre.
¨I directed a couple of shows when I was still in college for the Summer Youth Theatre. And there were a couple of instances where I was the last one in the building. We had done rehearsal, and I was locking up and I would hear footsteps upstairs.
“And there was one time when we were all down on stage, and the sound system just came on, spontaneously.
¨And I know that my friend Tom Booth, who’s the executive director, puts his keys down on this particular file cabinet. And then it was moved to another place and he lost his keys and then found his keys again.
¨There’s always a presence at the theatre, but he’s not a mean ghost. He’s always just there, just watching and I think he enjoys the shows, and he enjoys what we’re doing. He’s like a softer spirit than somebody who might have been, you know, thrown off a balcony or something.¨ Austin said.
