On August 26, students and fans packed Renasant Field as the Golden Wave defeated the Lafayette Commodores 34-0 in the first game of the season. The screams and shouts of the blue and gold faithful could be heard after each touchdown.
“I like a high scores for offense and shut out on defense. I like those games. As a defense coach, I would rather have a low score and beat them because [your] blood pressure probably goes up a little bit more when it’s back and forward changing scores like that,” Hardin said at Football Media Day. “But anytime there’s a W by your name at the end of the game, that’s the only ones I look forward to.”
Hardin got what he wished for. The Wave was led by Quarterback Jemamiah Harreln who had an exceptional start to the season with 24 completed passes for a grand total of 290 yards. 4 of which were touchdowns.
Wide Receiver, KD Gibson, led the team in receiving for a total of 100 yards and he also scored one touchdown.
The defense held the commodores to 4 first downs throughout the whole game
