Before the first light of dawn, Tupelo High’s JROTC cadets can already be found on the field where the early morning chill mingles with a buzz of anticipation. They stretch and review tactics, and mentally prepare for the intense PT challenges. Each semester the JROTC cadets participate in a PT Challenge. In April, they will take part in a physical fitness competition against other programs in the state and region.
Colonel Johnson emphasized the dual purpose of the challenge.
“Our goal in JROTC is to motivate young people to be better citizens. We focus on their mental and physical training, ensuring they’re equipped to take care of themselves. The upcoming physical fitness championship in April will test them on specific tasks designed to build both strength and character,” Johnson said.
The tasks include a mix of endurance running, strength exercises, and agility drills and are aimed at fostering a sense of discipline and resilience among the cadets.
Zoey Wenzel, a seasoned participant, shared her most impactful moment from the previous challenges.
“The rope run stands out,” Wenzel said. “It requires every team member to stay in sync and support one another. It’s not just about physical stamina; it’s about the teamwork and dedication that JROTC instills in us.”
Sometimes the instructors take part in the challenge.
“Col. Johnson can do a lot of pushups. He did like 90 before he got tired,” First Sargent Tyquez Raines said.
Last year the PT team placed third overall in multiple events as a first-year program.
“We want first this year. We’ve been working on pushups and mile times this year,” Raines said.
