With historical viewership and top-tier talent, women’s basketball is now the sport to watch. The sport is having an “Aura” moment that can’t be ignored.
“Women’s basketball has had a rising interest over the past few years,” said Zoey Huggins, a co-host of the Wave Theory Podcast. “ And it’s not just in one place, it’s all over the country,” added fellow host Maria Fernandez.
The excitement is backed up by stats and the names that have become household names across the nation. Top programs like South Carolina, Iowa, UConn, NC State, USC, and last but not least LSU have dominated the sport of women’s basketball, especially in college.
“The hyped game in which the Iowa Hawkeyes and record-breaking star Caitlin Clark took on, and lost to, No. 1-seeded South Carolina drew more than 18.9 million views in 2024, The viewership record for a women’s basketball game is still held by the 1996 olympics matchup between the United States and Brazil, but 18.9 million is still the most for any college women’s game,” Huggins said.
Not just college, but high school also.
The Lady Wave Basketball Team has been dominating the basketball scene for the past two years. Winning two state championships back to back makes them one of the most dominating and decorated teams at Tupelo High School.
“We’re going to be able to set a foundation for teams and players to come behind them to do the same,” coach Pashonda Edwards said.
