For students at Tupelo High School considering a career in law or public services, the Law & Public Safety CTE class offers an amazing glimpse into these fields. This class combines classroom learning with hands-on experience, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the legal system and how it works!
“It’s a very fun class. It’s not that easy, but it’s easy. And the teacher is very nice.” Natalie Tackett said.
The class aims to move beyond theoretical knowledge, making it a challenging course for some students.
“You learn a lot about the government basis that we live in, you learn about the basic laws. You can apply them in the real world. And you can also have a lot of fun here. If you don’t want to be in here and you don’t pay attention, you’ll get behind.” Juan Amador said.
Law & Public Safety’s main goal is to help students understand the interconnectedness of various roles within the legal and public safety sectors.
“We get to do cool experiences like mock trials and fake crime scenes.” Maddie Hewitt said. “I want to be a lawyer when i grow up, and so this class would help me with that.”
Such practical skills are invaluable for students considering future careers in this field. The class is for everyone, and furthermore, beneficial for everyone according to other students.
Ms. Bailey Berryman, the Law & Public Safety teacher, describes her objective for the course.
“The best part about teaching my class is the relationships that I have with my students. It’s always a little iffy in the beginning because you’re brand new, but it grows into more like a family.” Berryman begins. “One of the best things about this class is being able to teach them things that I really enjoy!” Berryman said.
“I bring in a lot of guest speakers, we do a lot of things like that. And I’ve been incorporating more projects lately, so trying to get them to really expand the knowledge that they’re learning in class. But we usually have a lot of fun. We do a lot of talking, just trying to apply the material to something that makes more sense with the real world.” Berryman said.
Ms. Berryman explains a typical day of being in the Law & Public Safety class, informing upcoming students of the CTE class what it would look like for them, giving an excellent insight into the class.
