Soccer vs Itawamba

Tupelo girls’ soccer has started its season with a bang with a record of 3-0. The Lady Wave beat the three-time 5a state champions Lafayette High School in their first few weeks of the 2022-23 season.

One big change that can be seen on the roster is for the first time in many years there are four 8th-grade girls that bus from the middle school to practice at the high school. Also seen on the roster is head coach Hannah Kimbrough who hasn’t held the position in 6 years and since then has been assistant under Diane Rulewicz.

Due to the loss of six 2021 graduate girls and two juniors graduating early. Only eight girls in total were left leaving the younger players an opportunity to step up and live up to the expectations of the past Lady Wave with a total of 12 wins and 3 losses outsourcing opponents 51-13.

Senior four-year player Emma Earwood likes the new roster because “the team is smaller and it gives an opportunity for the upperclassmen and the underclassmen to be way closer than in years past” as they bond better on and off the field.

Last week, the Tupelo girls beat Itawamba High School 6-0 and followed with their annual Tupelo Tournament where they defeated the Clinton Lady Arrows 3-0, who knocked them out of playoffs in double overtime last season. The Lady wave will travel to Jackson on December 9th to play the reigning state champions, Northwest Rankin.
