Tupelo Football plays new opponent Whitehaven to kick off season

Tupelo football played Whitehaven Saturday August 26, winning 37-0. 

Tupelo Varsity Football played their first official game as a 7A team against the Whitehaven Tigers, Saturday August 26. Tupelo had a powerful offense and defense throughout the course of the game.

Jeremiah Harrell, quarterback, completed a pass to score a touchdown only 2 minutes into the start of the game. 

Tupelo had 13 first downs and held Whitehaven to 9 first downs. Harrell passed to JQ Witherspoon to complete a touchdown at 2:45 in the second quarter. JJ Hill performed a handoff to give Tupelo a third and fourth touchdown. 

Gideon Deaton kicked a field goal to make the score 31-0. 

In the last moments of the first half, Jaboree Dooley intercepted the ball on the Whitehaven 20-yard-line to give Tupelo a fifth touchdown making the score 37-0 at the half.

 The defense held Whitehaven to 68 passing yards while Tupelo had 100 passing yards. The defense also made Whitehaven fumble the ball. 

The lead for Tupelo’s rushing was JJ Hill with 56 yards. 

The lead for pass receiving was JQ Witherspoon with 48 yards. Shamaar Darden led the team with 4 tackles. 

The final score was 37-0 giving the Golden Wave their first win of the season. 

Tupelo plays Southaven Friday Sept 1 at 7 p.m.

Kara Graham is an editor for Wave Media. She has always had a passion for writing and often writes poems and reads in her spare time. She is the recipient of the MSPA Best of Show Lede, MSPA Best of Mississippi Feature Writing/Reporting, and MSPA Best of Mississippi Depth Reporting Winner.  She is also an MSPA All-Mississippi Honoree. She had one of her articles published on the Best of SNO website. She is president of the journalism honor society Quill & Scroll. She participated in a virtual newsroom called Headliners of Summer where she was joined by writers from 16 states and 4 countries to write stories of local and national interest.
