THS offers a ceramics course to students in 10th through 12th grade. In Ceramics I, students learn how to build, mold, and pour clay, along with coloring their makings with glaze. The ceramics teacher, Patricia Parker, fires makings and leaves them for students the next day. In Ceramics II, students learn how to use a pottery wheel and build up clay with their hands.

“I think that this school district has such a very large group of students, and I want to be able to reach the ones that might not feel specifically artistic. But they are. For the people who might not make it into the upper-level art classes, they can make something here and feel good about themselves,” Parker said.

This is Ms. Parker’s 14th year of teaching ceramics at THS, she plans on retiring in 2026 when her daughter Stella graduates.

“My favorite part of teaching ceramics is seeing students who think they’re not artists make something very artistic.” Parker said.

Appreciation for the class is not just limited to the teaching staff, as students are also able to learn and have fun.

“My favorite part of ceramics is being able to make something and spend time with Ms. Parker. She makes the class feel like home. No matter the creation she’ll always tell you it’s beautiful even if you might not feel the same way.” Junior Audrey Ramirez said.
