Superintendent achieves hero status with school-delay tweet

From Staff Reports, Hi-Times

Superintendent Gearl Loden became winter’s hero with an 80-character tweet Sunday night.

“Two hour delay in the morning. We will continue to monitor conditions overnight,” the leader of the Tupelo Public School district tweeted to his 1,636 followers.

The response from Tupelo High School students, staff and fans was swift.

“I seriously like love you s’much,” senior Casey Owen responded.

“Bless you,” sophomore Karlee Avery tweeted.

“BLANKET OF THE YEAR = @gearlloden” was the reaction on #themblankets.

The announcement came on the night of the Academy Awards, prompting this tweet from THS sports information director Braden Bishop. “And the Oscar goes to… Dr. Gearl Loden.”

First block at THS began at 9:45 and ended at 10:30, with an abbreviated second block from 10:35-11:25. A normal schedule was in place for the remainder of the day. However, all after school activities are canceled.

Despite snowfall late in the afternoon, students were not dismissed early.
