Sza’s Musical Journey: Success, Struggles, and a Surprising Finale

Sza, Solána Imani Rowe, started her music career in 2010 releasing two extended plays: See.SZA.Run and S. Before embarking on her music career, Sza didn’t envision a future in music. She began humbly, recording songs with her neighbors and friends, using beats they found on the Internet.

After dropping out of Delaware State University, Sza found an unexpected musical outlet when her brother asked her to sing hooks for his mixtapes, which led her to explore her vocal abilities further.

“I never wanted to do music. Doing music seemed like a job, a burden that would remove the joy of listening.” Sza said in an interview with Djbooth.

After her first two EPs were released to critical acclaim, she released another extended play, Z, on April 8, 2014, and her first retail release. Following her dedication, she signed with the Hip-Hop record label, Top Dawg Entertainment, on April 28, 2017.

Despite the great success of her career, Sza has expressed that she does not plan to continue her solo music career.

“I’m still miserable. My world got so much smaller so fast. I have so much to write about. I feel like I’m in a cage. I’m making the best album of my life for this next album and I know that … because it’s going to be my last album.” Sza said in an interview with Essences.
This does not mark the end of her collaborative music career, as she will continue to contribute to songs by other artists.
