In the bustling gymnasium, where echoes of encouragement blend with the rhythm of upbeat music, stands Pinchy Lesley, her ponytail swinging in unison with each precise movement she makes.

As she’s a part of the Tupelo High cheerleading squad, her opinion on cheer runs deeper than the glittering pompoms and synchronized shouts. To Pinchy, cheerleading is not just about rallying the crowd, it’s a complex sport requiring strength, agility, and a team spirit that’s as unyielding as the stunts they perform.

People often overlook the hours of practice and the level of commitment it takes, Pinchy explains, her eyes reflecting the passion and dedication that have shaped her high school journey.

“My favorite part of cheer is cheering at football games. I really enjoy cheering for the football team.” Lesley said

Lesley shares her most memorable moment during cheer

“My favorite memories are just cheering in the playoffs. It’s just a lot, a lot of fun and the crowds are very excited.” Lesley said

The cheerleading squad at our school embodies school spirit, especially evident at football games and pep rallies where they play a pivotal role. Their enthusiasm and dynamic routines significantly contribute to the vibrant atmosphere of these events, keeping the crowd engaged and energized.

MJ: How do you stay motivated and maintain your energy level during long events?

PL: I genuinely enjoy cheerleading, it’s not just an obligation for me. There’s something about it that I find really fulfilling.
