Sun-loving hearts, yet eyes cold as ICE
America loves Latin American culture. From the music, the dances, the gastronomy, and even the inventions. Latinos are part of their day, yet they usually ignore the ones who created these traditions: the people
Americans love tacos, empanadas & pupusas
They love Latin music; reggaeton, mariachi or even corridos
They love the party and the drinks
They love avocados in their Super Bowl menu
In fact, the Super Bowl is the biggest day of the year
For avocado consumption in the United States
The presence of Latinos in your daily life is inevitable
From the vegetables that you might have in your fridge
And the roof that may cover you
To the nurse who gave your COVID-19 vaccine
These are the reasons why Americans are so quick
In blaming Latinos for “stealing” their jobs
When in reality, Latinos do the “dirty work.”
Yet they also call Latinos “lazy criminals.”
They are quick to point fingers
They are quick to call them “illegal aliens”
Which is ironic
Is ironic how they can call immigrants “illegals.”
On land built literally brick by brick
By immigrant hands
They love watching the Super Bowl
While eating guacamole
Guacamole from avocados that come in a box with a
“Cultivated in MEXICO” label
They love the Latin avocados
Yet when they saw that a Puerto Rican artist
Is going to perform in the Super Bowl
They got furious
They say they love the culture
They go to their favorite Brazilian restaurant
They see someone get abused by ICE
Yet they keep quiet and just stare with disgust
Not at the ICE officer
But at the immigrant who was just doing their job
And oh!
How their heart are loving Cancun’s beach sun
Yet their look
Their eyes are just like ICE
