Kindness matters at THS
In February, the city of Tupelo celebrates this year’s Tupelo Reads Book, Theo of Golden, by Allen Levi. The message of Theo of Golden is that compassion creates a richer, more connected life, inspiring readers to live with more love and presence through small, intentional acts of kindness.
THS got involved by encouraging teachers to recognize students who demonstrate kindness by giving them a feather (which symbolizes finding beauty in lost things and seeing the small, purposeful details in life) and sending them to the media center for a photo with the KIND banner.
These photos were shared on social media and displayed during the author’s campus visit on February 24 in recognition of students’ acts of kindness.
However, this was not the first project to recognize students’ good character traits. Ms. Allgood and Ms. White created a board outside their classroom to “bring out characteristics from students that we wanted everybody in the school to be more like.”
They have highlighted students who show qualities of good humans.
Be more like…
Be more like Georgia Kate Maynard. Kind to everyone, hard worker, A+ student, and a leader.
Be more like Kieran Lee. Hard worker, Volunteers to help in any way possible, and participates in classes,
Be more like James Christian. Kind, great group partner, always on task and quiet but speaks when & where it’s needed.
At THS, students are encouraged to be more like one of them or more like one of their characteristics. Be kinder, help the people around you and achieve things to be proud of.
Halfway down the hall in A building downstairs is the board with the “Be more like…” students. If you need motivation, want to be inspired or just see what some other students are achieving, go and visit it or maybe even ask the teacher of the classroom about it.
