Tupelo’s record fell to 3-2 after Friday night’s loss against Columbus. The Wave’s inability to convert on third downs and two dropped, wide-open touchdown passes contributed to the loss.

Halfway through the first quarter, CJ Gholar ran for 2 yards to claim Columbus’s first touchdown at Renasant Field. Later in the first, Tupelo’s Chris Shannon fumbled the ball, which was recovered by Columbus. Not even a minute later, Columbus also fumbled the ball and Tupelo got the it back. With 3:19 left, Josh Smith put 3 points on the board for Tupelo with a field goal. Columbus fumbled yet again in the last seconds of the first quarter. Columbus scored one more TD with 8:48 left in the first half. Tupelo trailed Columbus 13-3.

After halftime, Columbus’ Kylin Hill claimed two touchdowns for the Falcons. Columbus’ lead increased to 27-3 after the touchdowns and a field goal. With 10:16 left in the fourth quarter, Jaquerrious Williams got Tupelo’s first touchdown of the game. Tupelo went for the two-point conversion, but it was no good. Columbus snagged one last touchdown with 6:50 left in the game, making the final score 33-9.

The Golden Wave will face Southaven Oct. 9 for Tupelo’s Homecoming game at Renasant Field.
