R&B Singer SZA’s “SOS” has it’s flaws but worth the listen

SOS is the second studio album by the American singer SZA. The long-awaited album was released on December 9th, 2022. The album includes features guests such as Travis Scott, Don Toliver, and Phoebe Bridgers. The album envisions an anxiety-filled, self-deprecating, and heartbroken SZA seeking acceptance and love from a toxic ex-lover.

SZA is known for the soul and alternative R&B in her music. Her new album is now bringing in a nostalgic and toxic tone. Tracks such as “Kill Bill” and “Seek & Destroy.” She uses the R&B and pop genres to portray her views on betrayal and revenge.SZA creates gossip with the song “I hate you,” which details topics such as past friendships and heartbreaks. Songs like “Special” addresses her self-doubts about herself and the regrets of an ex-lover.

I disagree with the lyrics, “ I gave all my special; Away to a loser; Now I’m just a loser” in the song entitled “Special.” We should be mindful of the words we’re listening to. You’re not a loser, your unique. You shouldn’t hate yourself over someone else’s wrongdoings in a relationship.

While her single “I Hate you” is not my favorite song in the album, I think it was a great call to release this track in the album for her return to the music industry. The second single, “Shirt,” creates an upbeat and confident tone calling for her fans to love themselves and dismiss toxic people from their lives. I love the added introductions and outros from SZA’s friends and late grandmother. It gives more knowledge and wisdom to fans and adds more meaning and depth to the song.

From a fan’s perspective, I rate her album an 8/10. Mainly because of some of the toxic and heartbreaking tracks on the album. I still consider myself an SZA fan after this release. But this discography was needed to boost and expand her fanbase worldwide.
